The specialty of Pain Medicine is concerned with the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of painful disorders. Such disorders may have a discrete cause of pain such as postoperative pain, or may be syndromes such as neuropathic pains or headaches.
The diagnosis of painful syndromes relies on interpretation of historical data including previous diagnostic studies, laboratory tests, occupational, social, and behavioral aspects. The pain specialist may also require additional diagnostic tests to further his ability to make a correct diagnosis.
The pain physician may provide care at various levels, such as direct treatment, prescribing medication, prescribing rehabilitative services and performing pain relieving procedures. The physicians at the Alaska Spine Institute will also coordinate patient care with other healthcare providers as necessary for optimal healthcare delivery to the patient suffering from a painful disorder. Our physicians are competent to treat the entire range of painful disorders encountered in delivery of quality health care.
